Eckernförde

The city of Eckernförde is located directly at the Eckernförde bay.
It offers a variety of leisure time activities. If you are a fan of water games, this is the place to be. Here you can row, paddle, surf, sail, go high-sea fishing, dive and swim. This can also be undertaken in a sea water surf pool when the weather does not play along.
If you prefer having soil under your feet then go and exploit the 120 km long walking tracks in Eckernförde and the centre of Schleswig-Holstein. Other options would be to enjoy the 350 km of bicycle tracks thereby discovering the beauty of the region.

European Long Distance Hiking Tracks
Three European long distance hiking tracks – E1, E6 and E9.
Additionally, the Schlei Eider Elbe track which is an alternative to the E1, a few of the main hiking tracks and a multitude of regional tracks pass through the various areas of Schleswig-Holstein.
The tracks E6 and E1 run right through the centre of Schleswig-Holstein and are the hot spots for all hikers and nature lovers.

Flensburg

This fjord city with its marvellous harbour located right at the Danish border invites you to a wonderful time of sight seeing and shopping.
Other options would to take a ride on the Flensburg maritime symbol, the historical steamer “Alexandra” out on the Flensburg-Förde (Fjord); definitely an unforgettable experience!

Hardesvogtei
In the year 1856, Hardesvogtei was the administration center (headquarters) of the Hüttener Harde located at the eastern border of the small town of Fleckeby.
It is still intact and it is one of the very few buildings of it’s kind in the southern region of Schleswig. It is currently known to host an exhibition on the story of the “Harden” in the Dukedom of Schleswig.
The Hardesvogtei Fleckeby was known to house the administration center which is a typical form of local administration in the Dukedom Schleswig. At first the word "Harde" just meant a specific form of joint settlements.
The improvement of the governmental organization made the Harden an administrative and judicial center. The Harden represented only one of many forms of local administrations. They were subordinate to larger administration units called “Ämter”.
Outside the Harden order there were the towns, counties, landlords and monasteries. Harden existed in the Dukedom Schleswig. Hardesvogtei Fleckeby and cultural locations.

Molfsee
The open air museum Molfsee is the largest of its kind in northern Germany and well known far beyond the borders of Schleswig-Holstein.
It presents well maintained grounds of farm and city houses, management buildings and craftmen’s hoods that were common in Schleswig-Holstein between the 16th and 20th century.

Ochsenweg
The Ochsenweg (in English means "Oxen track") is the oldest long distance track in Schleswig-Holstein which is currently used as a long distance bicycle trail. It has played an important role in the cultural and economical development of the country. It was during the 14th century that the Jutland farmers drove their cattle along this path down to the big cattle markets in the Elbe region; approx. 50,000 animals in spring on a yearly basis.
Nowadays bicyclists can use the Ochsenweg to reach Denmark to visit the various historical landmarks which crosses through Schleswig-Holstein and its greenery diagonally.
This bicycle hiking trail is 504 km long and well signposted in both directions.
It inspires the sportsman, the nature lover and the historically interested equally.

Ostseebad Schönhagen

Schönhagen lies in close proximity to the Ostseebad Damp which is situated on the peninsula of Schwansen.
A bicycle trip or a walk along Schönhagen's coastline is recommendable. From its marvelous beach you have a breath taking view of Damp.

Owschlag
The village of Owschlag is famous for the Mini-Born-Park.

Rendsburg

Rensburg with its small lanes and houses is approximately 800 years old and is located right in the heart of Schleswig-Holstein.
Additionally Rendsburg offers something special for all technical enthusiasts: The „Iron Lady“, a railway bridge crossing the Kiel canal at a height of 42 meters carrying underneath a transporter bridge ferry. This definitely inspires both young and old.
And not to mention the world's largest dream ships that sail through the canal.

Schleswig

The city of Schleswig is internationally listed amongst the most important economic trade centers of the Vikings.
Haithabu located directly in front of Schleswig used to be the most important harbour, trade and craftmen’s post of the Vikings. They governed the entire Northern Europe from here.
Every second year the city is known to celebrate a great Viking fiesta on the banks of the Schlei with international participation. The Viking museum Haithabu with its impressing ship hall, its excavations and reconstructions of the old Viking settlement is an absolute must for any Viking enthusiast.
Moreover the city is known for its St. Petri Dome which was built during the 12th century. The 16 meters high “Bordesholmer Altar” is one of the most important art work of the Renaissance times. It was made out of oak wood by Hans Brüggemann in the beginning of the 16th century.

In the heart of Schleswig-Holstein

The highway exit to Damp and Eckernförde from the Autobahn 7 brings you more or less to the heart of Schleswig-Holstein.
It's impressive countryside and scenic nature is a worthwhile tourist spot. It has three nature parks which are adjacent to each other.
The best way to inform yourself on Schleswig-Holstein is to visit the information center Redderhus, a beautifully reed covered building only a few hundred meters away from the Autobahn exit in the direction of Damp. Here you’ll find multimedia exhibitions on the entire region especially Schleswig-Holstein “Knicks” which is particularly interesting for children. In addition Redderhus is known for its pub called “Redderhus-Krog”.
Trekking and bicycle tours are offered here, for instance to the nearby Wittensee.

Westensee
The nature park Westensee covers 250 km² and is located between Kiel, Neumünster and Rendsburg.
In its centre lies the well known Westensee. In its close proximity you will find numerous manor houses as well as the 88 meters high Tüteberg which is a prominent end moraine wall.
Thenice Westensee with its many bays is home to a multitude of different sorts of birds.
A visit to the manor Gut Emkendorf, the church St. Catharinen in the village of Westensee and the zoo Warder is highly recommended..
